In 1431, Franceâ™s General Gilles de Rais was Joan of Arcâ™s dear friend who failed to rescue her before she was burned at the stake. This could explain why de Rais suddenly becomes obsessed with Sekai when she and Sovieul find themselves in his castle...though it doesn't explain why de Rais believes Sekai is Joan of Arc!
